Chiropractic:
Chiropractic is the largest natural primary health care profession in the world.  It's one of the most praised
yet most misunderstood of all the health care disciplines, despite the fact that more than twenty-five
million Americans utilize it each year.  It's practiced by 50,000 doctors around the world and is licensed in
every state in the Union.  In accredited colleges in American, Japan, England, Australia, Canada, France
and South Africa more than 7500 students are studying this discipline.

History of Chiropractic:
The philosophy behind chiropractic can be traced all the way back to 2700 B.C. Chinese and Greek
writings mention spinal manipulations and maneuvering lower extremities to ease low back pain.  The
infamous Greek physician, Hippocrates, published writings detailing the importance of chiropractic.
Around 400 B.C., he wrote "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."

In 1897 the first chiropractic college (Palmer School of Chiropractic) was opened in Iowa by Daniel David
Palmer.  Throughout the twentieth century, doctors of chiropractic gained legal and professional
recognition in all fifty states and dozens of countries around the world.

Yes, Chiropractors are Doctors:
Doctors of chiropractic complete four to five years at a chiropractic college.  The complete curriculum
includes a minimum of 4200 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience.  Approximately 15%
of those hours are dedicated to adjusting techniques and spinal analysis.  The remaining 85% focuses
on the structure and function of the human body in health and disease.  This includes anatomy with
human dissection, physiology, and biochemistry.

Following graduation, doctors of chiropractic must also pass the national board exam and then their
particular state's exam.  Once licensed, chiropractic physicians are able to diagnose, provide therapy and
radiological services, and adjust.  They are able to diagnose and treat, which separates them from other
professionals such as physical therapists.

The Adjustment:
At the heart of chiropractic care is the adjustment.  A spinal adjustment is a specific application of forces
used to facilitate the body's correction of nerve interference.  The force must be given with the right amount
of pressure in the proper direction at the right time.  While it is usually done with the doctors hands,
adjusting instruments are sometimes used too.  What you can expect from your adjustment is a feeling of
peace and relaxation that can last from a day to a week.  Patients often comment that they experience a
better night's sleep and increased energy.  Some patients report that their symptoms start to go away
after the first adjustment, while others don't feel any immediate difference.  If you don't feel a change, don't
be discouraged.  Often you are not aware of the internal improvements.  Patients sometimes feel
soreness following an adjustment, but is rare to feel pain.  Adjusting a joint can result in the release of the
gases in between the joints - which is what causes a the popping noise you often hear.
